After obtaining my computing science degree I became interested in perception and neuroscience. I applied for a new top-master's study at a neuroscience research school (BCN) in Groningen. I was admitted, but - unfortunately - the study was cancelled two months before it was about to start. Consequently, I wandered around for about a year, mainly at BCN's neuroimaging centre as a research assistant in Frans Cornelissen's vision research group. In 2003 I started as a PhD student on a project about perceptual issues in information visualisation, combining my background as a computing scientist with my interests in the foundations of perception.
